Working with non-ITA Pet Partner® Teams
Many ITA handlers have expressed concern about the new “open” policy we have adopted; that is, what will it mean to work in facilities with individuals who are Delta Society® Pet Partners® but who are not members of ITA. I would like to address this concern now.
First of all, if for any reason it is necessary to have a Delta Certified Pet Partner® team who is not a member of ITA working at a facility where Good Shepherd handlers are volunteering, it will be because there are not enough ITA people available to do an adequate program. Any team that volunteers in a program, whether they are ITA members or not, will have undergone the training and mentoring that is necessary to do the job according to ITA standards. This means if an individual is needed to complete a program, they must be willing to take the instruction that all of you have had to take in order to be qualified to do the work. This individual must be willing to accept and respect all ITA criteria for working with their certified Pet Partner®. They must be willing to sign a confidentiality form and document their visits. They, too, will work under the supervision of ITA's facility mentor and will follow dress code and grooming practices. They must be forthcoming about techniques that are used and work closely, if the program calls for it, with ITA personnel.
I remind you that in order to even be considered, they must be a Delta-certified handler team. If you have any further questions about this policy, especially as it may affect you and your own situation personally, I recommend you contact Kathy Klotz, Executive Director and we will attempt to alleviate your concerns.
