Becoming an ITA volunteer therapy animal team
This program, including a workshop and person/animal screening, introduces potential therapy animals and their handlers to the basics of participation in Animal-Assisted Activities (AAA) and Animal-Assisted Therapy (AAT).

Come learn of the joys in helping your companion animals to help people!

The Workshop
Some of the important information you will learn:

  • How you and your animal companion can certify and register as a therapy animal team
  • The difference between animal-assisted therapy (AAT) and animal-assisted activities (AAA)
  • How to approach a facility about AAA/AAT visits
  • How to recognize signs of stress in your animal companion
  • How to conduct an AAA/AAT visit and what to bring with you
  • How to prepare your animal for an AAA/AAT visit
  • How to identify situations where animal visits are not appropriate
  • Common concerns of health-care and human services professionals about AAA and AAT
  • The appropriate terminology and conversational approaches for various clients

Screening For You and Your Animal
Individual screenings of person-animal teams is done by certified ITA Team Evaluators. Individual appointments will be scheduled for you and your animal as a team, to evaluate skills and aptitudes for visiting animal programs. Teams who take the training and pass the screening can register to be therapy animals.

Schedule and Costs

  • Workshop -9 am to 4 pm
    Workshop fee is $95.00, which includes all training materials and lunch. Pre-registration is required.
  • Team Screening
    The fee for your first team screening is $30.00; if you have more than one animal, testing will cost $25 for the second and $20 for each additional animal.

Please indicate your time preference between 9am and 2pm. You will be given a specific appointment when your registration is received. Requests are honored in the order they are received. The screening takes approximately 30 minutes. Pre-payment is required.

NOTE: Your animal must be at least one year old. You need to bring its city or county license and rabies vaccination proof (certificate and receipt) to your screening appointment.

Refund Policy
100% of your fee is refundable until 7 days before a workshop or evaluation. If you must cancel after that time, 50% is refundable, or 100% is transferable to another workshop on another date. No-shows are not refundable.
